There are things we hold onto
long after they stop holding us.
Not because they are still alive,
but because we remember when they were.
We stay.
We adjust.
We look for a way to remain.
Even when the signals are clear.
A door that does not open.
An experience that moves forward without us.
A conversation that shifts, just slightly, out of reach.
Nothing has to be said directly.
Something has already let go.
But we do not.
We hold with whatever we have left…
hands, voice, presence,
waiting for something to return.
It does not.
And slowly, the holding becomes the thing itself.
Not connection.
Not purpose.
Just the effort to stay.
And sometimes the hardest thing to release
is not what was lost,
but the moment we should have let it go.
