The Watch

I think I liked the watch more than he ever did.

That probably isn’t the way most keepsake stories begin, but it’s the truth.

Years ago, I was looking for a gift for my husband when I found it online. It wasn’t extravagant or rare. It was simply… different.

Rectangular instead of round.

Something about its shape caught my attention. I could picture him carrying it. I remember thinking, He’ll like this.

So I ordered it.

Sometimes a gift lands exactly where you hope it will.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

He appreciated it, I suppose, but not in the way I’d imagined. I don’t honestly remember him carrying it. Over time it became one of those things that quietly settled onto a shelf, then another shelf, until eventually it stopped running altogether.

By every practical measure, it should have left my life years ago.

It no longer keeps time.

From what I’ve read, it isn’t particularly valuable.

It probably isn’t worth repairing.

It certainly isn’t worth selling.

And yet…

It still tucked in the back of a drawer in my office.

It has a surprising weight for something that fits in the palm of my hand. I still like its shape. I still think it’s beautiful in the quiet, understated way that first caught my eye all those years ago.

After my husband died, I realized something unexpected.

When I look at the watch, I don’t remember him carrying it.

I remember choosing it.

I remember sitting at a computer, scrolling through possibilities until one image stopped me.

That’s the one.

Not because I knew.

Because I hoped.

Funny how some objects outgrow the purpose for which they were made.

This one no longer measures hours or minutes.

It measures something much harder to quantify.

A moment when I was paying close enough attention to another person to imagine what might bring him joy.

Whether I guessed correctly almost doesn’t matter anymore.

The gift reminds me less of how it was received than of how it was given.
